A commercial motorcycle rider , identified as Biliaminu Olayiwola, was crushed to death on Thursday at Daleko , Mushin, Lagos State , while running away from some hoodlums said to be ‘ ticketing officials ’ .
PUNCH Metro gathered that the victim had picked a passenger in an area which was said to be outside his route.
A witness, Ahmed Kasali, said some ticketing officials working with motorcycle riders in the Daleko area gave him a chase .
He was fleeing from the area when he was crushed to death while attempting to overtake a trailer .
Kasali, who operated a tricycle , said the incident caused tension in the community , adding that the passenger escaped with some injuries .
He said , “ What usually happens is that as a motorcycle rider, you have your area of operation . The motorcycle rider, in a bid to make more money, brought a passenger from Isolo, which was his base , to Mushin. He was returning to Isolo when he saw another passenger , whom he picked.
“Some agberos sighted him and started chasing him . Because the rider knew if they caught up with him they would extort money from him , he started speeding . He rode against the traffic , thinking he could overtake the trailer and escape .
“ He , however , miscalculated and fell into the path of the trailer , which crushed him to death. The passenger , probably sensing danger , jumped off the motorcycle and escaped before the accident happened . ”
PUNCH Metro learnt that to escape the wrath of a mob, the trailer driver disembarked the vehicle and fled to the Olosan Police Station, which was close to the scene of the accident.
Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency were said to have removed the corpse and deposited it in a mortuary, while the trailer was towed to the station .
The General Manager of LASEMA, Mr . Adeshina Tiamiyu , confirmed the incident, adding that the agency received a distress call around 9. 19am .
He said , “ The accident happened around the Daleko bridge inward Isolo. We immediately deployed our Emergency Response Team in the scene of the accident .
“ Investigation conducted by the team revealed that the motorcycle rider was crushed under a trailer while trying to make a U – turn.
“ The rider lost his life to the incident and his corpse was recovered by the LASEMA ERT and was handed over to the police.
“ The driver of the trailer fled immediately the accident occurred, but was apprehended by the police at the Olosan Police Station. ”
PUNCH Metro gathered that officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Lagos State Ambulance Service , Lagos State Traffic Management Authority , Lagos State Fire Service and Federal Road Safety Corps collaborated in ensuring the successful management of the incident.
